What to do here - Ask not what you can do for Stellenbosch, but rather what Stellenbosch can do for you! We here at iKhaya Stellenbosch Backpackers are seriously a fun loving lot! You actually can’t help spending more than a few days here! The people are cosmopolitan, friendly and in a lot of cases really funny. WE DO NOT ALLOW THE FOLLOWING HERE AT iKhaya Stellenbosch Backpackers If you are grumpy, have forgotten how to smile, have lost your sense of adventure, then this is not the place for you, but, since you’re still reading, we seem to have the admittance criteria sorted! Now where do we begin? We recommend that you use us as a base to explore the surrounding areas by day and chill with us by night. Stellenbosch is the 2nd oldest town in South Africa founded in 1679, Cape Town being the oldest. Stellenbosch is also known as the “Eikestad” – “Town of Oaks” because of the abundance of Oak trees. Right across the road from us is “Die Braak” the old village green with many historic buildings around it such as the “VOC Kruithuis” (Powder House) 1777, The Old Rhenish Mission, the Church of Saint Mary 1852, the Coachman’s Cottage and the Old Burgerhuis 1797. Dorp Street boasts the longest row of historical buildings in South Africa amongst these, the old elegant gabled mansion that houses the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Museum next door to the Stellenryck Wine Museum. Other interesting buildings would include the Theological College, the Old Reading Room, Old Parsonage, Old Lutheran Church – now an Art Gallery, Stellenbosch Gymnasium, La Gratitude, Voorgelegen, Oom Samie se Winkel – one of the first General dealers and the Toy and Miniature Museum – the only one of its type in South Africa. The Stellenbosch Village Museum in Ryneveld Street consists of 4 houses each restored and furnished in the style of its period ranging from 1709 to 1850. Stellenbosch has numerous art galleries and museums in which to while away the hours. Entertainment abounds as Stellenbosch is also the oldest university town with more than a third of it’s population made up of university students, of this ⅓, a ⅓ are post graduate students, so when it comes to night life there is plenty to do. From restaurants to trendy cocktail lounges, from house to live music, all are on our doorstep.
