ATTRACTIONS
Ask not what you can do for Stellenbosch, but rather what Stellenbosch can do for you!
Our town is perfectly situated in a magnificent mountain valley and is the ideal destination in which to base yourself when exploring the Winelands, Cape Town, the Peninsula or any of the surrounding areas. Stellenbosch is without question one of the prettiest towns in our country and is rich in culture and history.
We here at iKhaya Stellenbosch Backpackers are a fun loving lot and would love nothing more than to help you plan your stay in Stellenbosch recommending things to do and places to see.
Stellenbosch is the 2nd oldest town in South Africa founded in 1679, Cape Town being the oldest, and is also known as the “Eikestad” – “Town of Oaks” because of the abundance of Oak trees which line our picturesque streets.
Dorp Street boasts the longest row of historical buildings in South Africa, amongst these, the old elegant gabled mansion that houses the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Museum next door to the Stellenryck Wine Museum. Other interesting buildings would include the Theological College, the Old Reading Room, Old Parsonage, Old Lutheran Church – now an Art Gallery, Stellenbosch Gymnasium, La Gratitude, Voorgelegen, Oom Samie se Winkel – one of the first General dealers and the Toy and Miniature Museum – the only one of its type in South Africa.
Entertainment abounds as Stellenbosch is also the oldest university town, so when it comes to night life there is plenty to do. From restaurants, trendy cocktail lounges to live music, all are on our doorstep and the possibilities are endless.
We suggest that your itinerary include some of these magnificent attractions:
