OUR STORY
iKhaya (meaning “Our Home” in the local language) was started in 2005 by Richard Daneel of sure Stellenbosch Travel. It is a family-run business now that Matthew, his son, joined him in March 2010 after the revamp as well as Robyn, his daughter, who provides assistance with the business.
iKhaya was founded by Richard, a travel and tourism fundi, because he noticed that South Africa was fast becoming a very popular destination amongst young backpackers. These travellers were looking to utilise their budget for visiting attractions, learning about our diverse culture and rich heritage, whilst minimising costs of accommodation.
He then set about establishing a backpacker's lodge with the help of Nico Grobbelaar. iKhaya is a lodge with a difference, as apartments with fully equipped kitchens allow guests the freedom of a self catering accommodation with the affordability of being a backpackers.
Our vision is to create a backpacking lodge which is a home away from home to our guests. Providing safe and comfortable accommodation in the heart of the Winelands, leaving guests to take away a wonderful South African experience and a few new good friends!
